Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to provide data for effective coping interventions for female cadets¡¯
perimenstrual discomforts.

Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 430 female cadets. Perimenstrual discomforts were measured by the modified MDQ and by a VAS. Perimenstrual discomforts coping methods were measured by the menstrual coping instrument.

Results: 1) The proportion of female cadets who reported perimenstrual discomforts was 89.3% with a mean score of 5.87, as measured by the VAS. The perimenstrual discomforts mean score was 2.28, as measured by the modified MDQ. 2) Effective alleviation with coping methods were applying a warm pad on the lower abdomen / back, taking a painkiller, rest / sleep, knee-chest position, and taking a warm shower. 3) The perimenstrual discomforts of female cadets during field training is higher than usual (mean score of 7.16, as measured by the VAS). Perimenstrual discomforts coping methods were taking a painkiller and taking a contraceptive during field training.

Conclusion: The results suggest that effective alleviation with nonpharmacological coping methods for perimenstrual discomforts was applying a warm pad, rest / sleep, knee-chest position, taking a warm shower, and regular appropriate exercise for female cadets. Therefore, we need to provide information and an educational program about effective nursing interventions.
